Joy

"And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10 NLT

The joy of the Lord is my strength.

Sounds mysterious. But it's actually very straight forward.

"For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!" 2 Corinthians 4:17 NLT

Whether you are going through small irritations (car problems or a financial squeeze) or family crises (troubled marriage, wayward children), heavy challenges (fatal illness, hospital stays, crushing medical bills), the joy of the Lord is your strength.

The joy of the Lord isn't a feeling that pops up, unexpectedly, out of nowhere. The joy of the Lord is a choice.

I have been planning to set aside one day a week, Mondays, for example, to praise and worship God during my prayer time. Wild, crazy praise. All by myself. Dancing, shouting, leaping, falling facedown, bowing in worship, etc before God.

I wonder what would happen in my life if I would actually do this. No requests. No petitions. Just one day a week to mentally clean house and replace every worry and concern that may pop up during the day with loud, boisterous praise and worship.

(You may not be able to practice this in your workplace, just saying.)

I will let you know how it goes.

"Thank You, Jesus, for this revelation. I am going to set aside some time, as the Jews did here in Nehemiah, to celebrate. First, I repent of all of my petty, selfish concerns. Then I ask You to clean out my heart. I replace every concern, worry, or challenge with Your joy. I lay everything at Your feet, and leave it there. Especially the stuff that I can't fix. I simply praise and worship You. Your joy is my strength. How I love You, Jesus. AMEN."

Gatekeeper

"In all, there were 212 gatekeepers in those days, and they were listed according to the genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed their ancestors because they were reliable men. These gatekeepers and their descendants, by their divisions, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the Lord when that house was a tent. The gatekeepers were stationed on all four sides—east, west, north, and south. Their relatives in the villages came regularly to share their duties for seven-day periods. The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were trusted officials, for they were responsible for the rooms and treasuries at the house of God. They would spend the night around the house of God, since it was their duty to guard it and to open the gates every morning. Some of the gatekeepers were assigned to care for the various articles used in worship. They checked them in and out to avoid any loss. Others were responsible for the furnishings, the items in...

Odd Duck

"He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son." John 1:10-14 Are you an odd duck? Jesus was the Perfect Example of an odd duck. He was God and man. In the same body. How odd is that? He came into the world he created. Huh? The very world He created didn't recognize Him. His own people rejected him. Ever felt rejected by everyone, even your own family? You are not alone. Instead of walking around in the shame of being an odd duck, just know that you are in Good Company. Jesus was part of the Master Plan. His own Master...

Equal Opportunity

"There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” “How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked. Jesus replied, “You are a respect...
